Carlos Gallegos-Loja, 23, of Brockton, Massachusetts, faces multiple charges following the stop early Sunday morning, June 22, Connecticut State Police Said.
Troopers in Hartford said they first spotted a Chevrolet Traverse stopped on the shoulder near Exit 44 just after 1 a.m. The SUV’s occupants were outside the vehicle, but as Troopers turned around to check on them, the vehicle took off.
Shortly after, another Trooper clocked the same SUV flying down I-84 near Exit 39, traveling 122 mph in a 65 mph zone. Police say the driver was also weaving out of his lane. The Trooper activated emergency lights and sirens, and the vehicle eventually stopped near Exit 37 in Farmington.
When speaking with Gallegos-Loja, Troopers said he showed “clear signs of impairment,” including “slow actions, slow speech, and open alcoholic containers in plain view within the vehicle.” Asked why he had stopped earlier, Gallegos-Loja told them “he had pulled over to drink a beer, then continued on his way westbound,” police said.
He was arrested after failing a field sobriety test.
Gallegos-Loja is charged with:
- Operating without insurance
- Reckless driving
- DUI (alcohol/drugs)
- Failure to maintain lane
- Improper parking
- Driving without a license
- Drinking while driving
Gallegos-Loja was released on $1,000 bond, police said.
